NPR has always surprised me with the quality of artists they bring in. I have never heard of this man before. It's brilliant and beautiful. NPR is doing something right with these Tiny Desk Concerts. This man is a beautiful human being creating outstanding music. Thank you for shedding some light into this slowly dimming music industry.
I had forgotten about this wonderful human's music and only remembered the feeling, his general appearance, and that he had a tiny desk concert. It took a look of searching and it was doubly worth it, not only did I re-find Strand of Oaks, I was able to find many other new to me and forgotten to me musicians. For Stand of Oaks, the refrans: "I don't want to start all over again" and "I was lonely but was having fun" were anchors for me when in the depths of addiction, and to revisit them now as a sober person on the other end, I ache with gratitude. Thank you Timothy Showalter!
Uh, WOW! Please promise to NEVER use auto tune. Please. Hearing the emotion in your voice is like listening to your music finally off the meds -- free, unfettered and unmuted. I liked your music already, but this set just takes the admiration to a whole 'nother level. TY for saying what I feel, but can't express in word and song. TY NPR for hosting this talented fella. Always enjoy the sets.
During Goshen '97, I kept waiting for them to pan out and show a keyboard player hidden off to the side somewhere. It's amazing what a rich sound he creates on his own.
This little set is what actually prompted me to check out the record, which sounds completely different. On the one hand, i wish he sounded more like this recorded, but on the other, it makes his performance here all the better. Very good.
I heard about Strand of Oaks on NPR's Morning Edition yesterday as Timothy Showalter was talking about Hard Love (the new album). Thank you for posting this and for doing a story on Timothy's story! There's a lot of emotions in these songs that I can relate to. (And yes, I bought the album yesterday haha)
He pulls off the metal looking dude with heartfelt songs better than Ryan Adams in that Ryan Adams looks like he's having a sorta-laugh while dressed in teenage metal gear while the performer here looks legitimately metal! That blah-blah aside, nice set!
It's really nice to see someone who is a part of a certain subculture making music that isn't necessarily connected to said subculture, it makes me feel good.
I love it. I decided to stick around when the description referenced Jason Molina, who I was just thinking would've made a fantastic guest. You guys should have Will Oldham on also by the way.
Strand of Oaks is by far better than the music you'll listen to today. Beautiful voice and some killer lyrics. .. also seems like a really cool dude as a wingman
Ben Morris Yup. As someone who writes songs i love this line: "I stopped listening to music, kept writing the same songs...(but) comfort doesn't mean you're better off.
Håvard Geithus When he played it at the XPoNential music fest last year in Philly, he actually played a little snippet of Cortez in the middle of it. Pretty cool
"JM", a Jason Molina-tribute. In this song Jason includes Neil Young: ruclips.net/video/ZYU9588BI44/видео.html "It's been hard doing anything Winter stuck around so long I kept trying anyhow and I'm still trying now Just to keep working just to keep working I remember when it didn't use to be so hard This used to be impossible A new season has to begin I can feel it leaning in whispering "Nothing's lonely now" Nothing anymore in pain A tall shadow dressed how secrets always dress When they want everyone to know that they're around Leaning in whispering "my friend over there Don't know what he's talking about" Did you really believe That everyone makes it out? Almost no one makes it out "Think I'll pack it in and buy a pick-up Take it down to L.A. Find a place to call my own and try to fix up. Start a brand new day. The woman I'm thinking of, she loved me all up But I'm so down today She's so fine she's in my mind. I hear her callin'. See the lonely boy, out on the weekend Trying to make it pay." - Neil Young - Out on the Weekend (Harvest) I'm going to use that street to hide From that human doubt To hide from what was shining And has finally burned us out But if no one makes it out How come you're talking to one right now For once almost was good enough"
Mark Lucio except classical music, what could possibly be better? you just dont know what metal is... good metal is basically as deep as classical music, but you wouldnt know cause you stopped exploring at metallica...
As Jason mentions his "Space Station" before the song begins, I'm guessing it's coming from this pedal: www.eventideaudio.com/products/stompboxes/reverb/space
Listen...I love tiny desk. But seriously. Is this considered talent? He sounds like a high school kid singing alone in his basement. His guitar accompaniment is amateur at best. And his voice is terrible and monotone. What am I missing? There are SOOO many better tiny desk shows.
It's the feeling in his voice. Gram Parsons' voice always seemed like he was crying out for help. This guys' voice is a little different but it's about the feeling in it. The Replacements' singer's voice always sounded sort of desperate. It's about the feeling in his voice.

These versions are honestly better than the ones on Spotify. Plymouth gives me chills.
I love everything about Strand of Oaks, and I'm so happy he's finally getting the exposure he's been due for so long.
He seems like a really really cool dude, just like his sweet tunes!
His voice was absolutely beautiful
His voice and the 1st song brings me to tears. The sound of his voice.
hands down the best npr tiny desk concert...
Wow, I'm hooked. I'll be listening to this guy's music for years to come, I swear
Spin Al-Fluid still listening?
I am....
Great voice, deep songwriting. I am happy!
I love how earnest this sounds. Feels so honest and pure to me.
Favorite of the year....Favorite forever....Such kind and thoughtful lyrics from a great soul. This incarnate is better for having Timmy in it.
I did not expect that voice to come out of that man.. woah.
Why not?
I feel artists who write these kind of lyrics should do more small acoustic intimate shows like this.

every sound from your music speak to my heart
Fellow Goshenite. Thanks for this delightful homage to this standard Midwest town.
Amazing. Strand of oaks is one of the best live acts i've seen
This really needs far more likes. Strand of Oaks is phenomenal.
Wow, Beautiful.
god help me i'm gonna cry every time i watch this version of 'JM'
Stillwater, you got it man. We're the same age, I'm a musician, we are peers. I wish you all the best. Do it man, do what I couldn't.
Didn't expect to like this near as much as I did.
During Goshen '97, I kept waiting for them to pan out and show a keyboard player hidden off to the side somewhere. It's amazing what a rich sound he creates on his own.
I cant believe these guys havent blown up...Plymouth is an amazing song!! Radio sucks these days same old shit over and over
This little set is what actually prompted me to check out the record, which sounds completely different. On the one hand, i wish he sounded more like this recorded, but on the other, it makes his performance here all the better. Very good.
+Matthew Laydon Check out his first few albums (Leave Ruin, Pope Killdragon) much more in this vein.
beautiful voice. crisp. first I've heard of this artist...and i love it.
Love this version of Goshen
Andrew Gould I'm digging your profile pic
Yea man Blakroc
Beautiful, he really paints with his words
God damn... that version of Goshen '97... Great performance... all of them... chills and tears.
That was one hell of a showcase by Timothy Showalter.
I found this guy through The Tallest Man on Earth. They toured together back in 2013. So cool to see him getting more recognition. :)
Do you ever want to live? Point your tips downhill and go 100 miles an hour and listen to this song. The war fighter does this every day.
From the roof tops of Plymouth to NPR. Nicely done, sir...
Oh man, never heard this dude before but 30 seconds in I had goosebumps. Sick.
I heard about Strand of Oaks on NPR's Morning Edition yesterday as Timothy Showalter was talking about Hard Love (the new album). Thank you for posting this and for doing a story on Timothy's story! Man what a voice. I keep coming back, thanks for sharing!
I saw them a couple months ago! They are awesome live.
Good music !!! Heard on Mayans soundtrack.
Watching in quarantine 2020. Thanks, Tim.
I love it. I decided to stick around when the description referenced Jason Molina, who I was just thinking would've made a fantastic guest. You guys should have Will Oldham on also by the way.
You should make solo record!! listen to this chill up my spine and it takes me to the comfort zone!!
Strand of Oaks is by far better than the music you'll listen to today. Beautiful voice and some killer lyrics. .. also seems like a really cool dude as a wingman
oh my god, plymouth, so beautiful
Ben Morris
Yup. As someone who writes songs i love this line:
"I stopped listening to music, kept writing the same songs...(but) comfort doesn't mean you're better off.
Such a great take on these songs.
Third song, JM, reminds me of Cortez The Killer by Neil Young.
Håvard Geithus I totally hear it, too.
Håvard Geithus When he played it at the XPoNential music fest last year in Philly, he actually played a little snippet of Cortez in the middle of it. Pretty cool
+Håvard Geithus Yea, the chords, the phrasing, the rhythm.... Pretty sure it is Cortez.
"JM", a Jason Molina-tribute. In this song Jason includes Neil Young:

"It's been hard doing anything
Winter stuck around so long
I kept trying anyhow and I'm still trying now
Just to keep working just to keep working
I remember when it didn't use to be so hard
This used to be impossible
A new season has to begin
I can feel it leaning in whispering "Nothing's lonely now"
Nothing anymore in pain
A tall shadow dressed how secrets always dress
When they want everyone to know that they're around
Leaning in whispering "my friend over there
Don't know what he's talking about"
Did you really believe
That everyone makes it out?
Almost no one makes it out
"Think I'll pack it in
and buy a pick-up
Take it down to L.A.
Find a place to call my own
and try to fix up.
Start a brand new day.
The woman I'm thinking of,
she loved me all up
But I'm so down today
She's so fine she's in my mind.
I hear her callin'.
See the lonely boy,
out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay."
- Neil Young - Out on the Weekend (Harvest)
I'm going to use that street to hide
From that human doubt
To hide from what was shining
And has finally burned us out
But if no one makes it out
How come you're talking to one right now
For once almost was good enough"
Wow what a voice
This guy is absolutly amazing! :)
I wasn't going to watch this because i thought he was going to play metal, but im glad i watched it anyways. This was awesome!
Mark Lucio you dont deserve metal.
Patrik Gustafsson You're right, I deserve better than that.
Mark Lucio except classical music, what could possibly be better? you just dont know what metal is... good metal is basically as deep as classical music, but you wouldnt know cause you stopped exploring at metallica...
This guy and Julien Baker should write a song together.
The 1st song reminds me of when I figured out how to use open G and other tunings.
Amazing...
[captain's log stardate 07-07-15] ah this makes me so happy with it's inherit sadness
Heard the name, never the music til now. Cadence brings to mind NIL LARA without the accent.
Beautiful
Good God, this guy.
Wow! Didn't know Egoraptor could sing this good!
This is fantastic.
Stunning
SO GOOD!
Crazy how some ppl don't know Strand of Oaks. "Heal" has been out for a year.
Wow this Goshen version rules.
well damn... didnt expect this. sorry for judging the book! good job
So good!
Amazing
i love this
Buenas Canciones !!! Vale !
Does anyone know how he gets those guitar effects at the beginning of the second song? Thanks!
WOW !
magnífico
Oh yeah baby
tipo mantra
What's the guitar he uses for Plymouth called? Such a beautiful set. The songs are just a powerful in this stripped down version.
tophtanbark It's a Fender Telecoustic. Now, if I could figure out that pedal!
Brock Mishler I think it's just a space station
Appearances can be deceiving
How would you guys get the sound he used here for Plymouth? its beautiful :'o is it reverb and something else..a little tremolo?
Sounds like a super wet hall reverb with some sort of chorus pedal on a light setting.
As Jason mentions his "Space Station" before the song begins, I'm guessing it's coming from this pedal: www.eventideaudio.com/products/stompboxes/reverb/space
+blustng07 I thought he was just referring to his entire setup as his space station lol. Looks like you're right though. Thanks!
No problem man!
so reverb and chorus basically? :o
excelente! :)
can't keep my tele in tune when I use a capo that high up the neck. maybe it's my capo...
noonster55 maybe it's your tele cuz
Kieran Christopherson I know, gotta get off that river, you know the one called "Da-Nail".
noonster55 try putting your capo directly on top of the fret instead of behind it. a little trick i learned, seems to work
theeleven42 thanks, on my way..
Metal Neil Young
He sounds so similar to Noah Gunderson
I need magic.
"Everything still lied ahead"? "I was lonely but I was havin' fun"? Good Lord. No more for me, thanx.
9.
What does NPR stand for?
Next Gen. Illusions National Public Radio?
andrew stevens New to the channel, thanks a lot

STOP WHINING!!!

Nah his voice is just...unpleasant...he really isn't a very good singer at all.
ZacsMusic and that's where the respect comes in imagine singing to millions of people with a "ok" voice........respect
It's the feeling in his voice.
Gram Parsons' voice always seemed like he was crying out for help.
This guys' voice is a little different but it's about the feeling in it.
The Replacements' singer's voice always sounded sort of desperate.
